Mapping the various boundaries of meaning can be tricky...

حادثه in the largest sense is "event" and this usage is very common in talking about the news...حوادث روز but in this case we should use "accident"

تصادف basically means "collision" or "coincidence", whence "accident"

So, which word to use in Persian depends on "what type of accident in English". If it is car crashes on the highway, we would probably say تصادف.

If it is a chemical plant explosion, we would probably say حادثه

Apparently the man died from an electric shock caused by a non-standard stone-cutting machine (I hope that's correct for دستگاه سنگبری غیر استاندارد) in his workplace.

در فارسی واژه ی حادثه و تصادف اگرچه هم معنی اند ولی قاعدتا نمی توانند به جای یکدیگر مورد استفاده قرار بگیرند. به طور نمونه نمی توان گفت تصادف ناگوار در قتل یا تصادف مرگ بار در بمباران و یا تصادف دلخراش زلزله.

The difference between حادثه and تصادف is analogous with the difference between the English words "incident" and "accident" respectively. The former refers to "something that happens, often something that is unpleasant", while the latter - which is a specific type of incident - refers to "something which happens unexpectedly and unintentionally, and which often damages something or injures someone".

حادثه is closer to رویداد or واقعه. the term تصادف has a connotation of a car accident in Persian in many cases though it can be a synonym for حادثه.

یک حادثه، یک رویداد خارجی مشخص، قابل شناسایی، ناگاه و غیرقابل پیش‌بینی، غیرعادی و بدون قصد است که در یک زمان و مکان ویژه روی می‌دهد، و بدون دلیل آشکار است، اگرچه اثری مشخص دارد. یک حادثه معمولاً احتمال نتیجهٔ منفی و ناگواری دارد که با آگاهی از دلایل رویدادی که حادثه را می‌آفریند و انجام کار مناسب پیش از رویداد، می‌توان از آن جلوگیری و پیشگیری نمود.

Thank you so much – I had always thought that تصادف was the Persian word for ‘accident’. Do we have two complete synonyms here?

Or could it be that تصادف means a 'crash' (in particular on the roads) and حادثه is ‘accident’ in a general sense?
