Persian (Farsi) term or phrase: کازو
Hi,

Just had a wonderful day celebrating چهارشنبه سوری with my Iranian friends.

We had a picnic on the shore of the Gulf of Izmir. They had brought some food with them, and when I pointed to a nut they said that it was a کازو. I guess they might have meant کاژو - I may have misheard.

But do you have a kind of nut that is called کازو or possibly کاژو?

Best wishes, and many thanks in advance,

Simon

Many thanks equally for this and the other two excellent answers; however, 'peanut' must be what was meant.

agree  Behnam Paran: Exactly! Some people from "Shiraz" use this word instead of "بادام زمینی".

cashew

Explanation:
my dictionary shows آکاژو and کاشو for cashew, but I have always heard the Persian word for cashew as بادام هندی

I think it must have been one of these words...or a mispronunciation of them that you heard.

agree  Ahmad Kabiri: Cashew is a bit different from بادام هندی. Some people also pronounce this word as "کاچو".

-> thanks...whenever I have gone to an "Ajil forushi" in Tehran, I have always asked for "bAdum hendi" for cashews...and the labels say "bAdAm hendi"
