"Bum" is normally slang for a lazy person who doesn't do productive work. Jeff appears to have profitably dedicated his professional life to documenting the on-the-beach-all-day, party-all-night culture.

-> Thanks. You're right about Jimmie Buffet, Max. In general, hippies have (or in their heyday had) a bit more on their mind than margaritas...

agree  Donna Stevens: Jenni, you picked up on the interesting aspect of Jeff's nickname- Bums don't work for a living. Perhaps he used to be a beachbum and found out that he had to actually earn a living- so he focused on what he knew best.

-> Thanks Donna. Some people are just downright clever. My husband once wryly noted that for every person who earns his living as a translator there are ten earning a better living giving advice to translators...

agree  Jack Doughty: How can you get a better living by giving advice to translators than by translating?

-> Thanks Jack. How? Teaching them Trados, how to do their taxes, how to optimize their computer, how to market themselves, etc. My husband was very amused.

Reference information:
"Beach bum is a term used to denote a subculture, the characteristics of which often include aspects of but do not necessarily extend to the surfer, the stoner or the hippie subcultures. Jimmy Buffett is a famous archetypal beach bum.
The members of this subculture are typically ocean and beach-going people who enjoy spending spare time sitting or relaxing on a beach. As such, the life of a beach bum is usually one of leisure. This holds true if the particular beach bum is a local, a retiree, a vacationer, or just someone who enjoys life by the ocean."
