English term or phrase: linen runner (US)
"He thinks of his father's dresser in his own mother's bedroom, kept intact, as though any minute his father might come back and need the items on the linen runner."

I found this definition for runner: a groove or strip along which a drawer, sliding door, curtain, etc slides.
Can it mean the same as "drawer"? Drawer for underwear, perhaps?

Selected answer:runner made of linen
Explanation:
This would be a runner (strip of fabric) across the top of the dressing table. Runner is defined as a 'long narrow tablecloth'.

You can imagine that his father\'s paraphenalia (razer, comb, whatever) is still laid out on top of the runner as if he uses it every day. The suggestion is perhaps that the father is dead and will not be needing it again, but it is left there anyway ...
