value

English language (monolingual) [Non-PRO]
Social Sciences - Philosophy / synonym
English term or phrase: value
What I'm looking for is a word that conveys the same general sense as the word 'value', but without the implied connection to quantitative ways of thinking and money.

In ethics, when people discuss 'value', the meaning is often very broad.

'He values his family very highly' - 'Security was a greater value than freedom' - 'A person must decide moral actions based on their values'

So what I'm looking for really is synonym for 'value' that has no monetary or quantitative associations, and basically means 'something you care about'.

Thanks.

Asker: Thanks, I had considered worth, but it's uncountable and I need a countable noun.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks, but your own explanation demonstrates the awkwardness of trying to noun-ify it. I need something a bit easier to use. Also, importance carries the association with trade in its etymology at least.

He cherishes his family very highly.
Security was a greater merit than freedom.

If you would like to use the same word for each sentence, you can use a word with a broader meaning like significance or importance.
