English term or phrase: underlying structural connectivity
Dear colleagues,
I have a doubt about the meaning of “underlying structural connectivity” in the passage below. At first I thought “connectivity" could refer to circuits and networks in the brain, but I posted a similar question in the English-Italian section - https://www.proz.com/kudoz/english-to-italian/medical-genera... - and according to one of the answers, “connectivity” might refer to “connective tissue”.
What's your opinion?
Thank you so much for your help!

As we’ve seen, these prefrontal areas link cortex, limbic area, brainstem, body, and even the social signals from other people together into one synchronized and integrated mindweb. Even the right and left prefrontal regions may coordinate their different functions with each other in an integrative fashion.
When injury occurs to this prefrontal region, various mental processes may thus be functionally isolated from one another, and with these integrative circuits blocked, a range of dysfunctions, fitting into the notion of “mental disorders,” may arise. As Deco and Kringelbach suggest:

If the *** underlying structural connectivity *** is damaged, as is found in many brain disorders, a much more limited repertoire of CTC (Communication Through Coherence) routes is available, with potentially severe consequences. For example, it has been shown that the anterior insula and cingulate cortex are part of the common neurobiological substrate for mental illness across six diverse diagnostic groups (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, addiction, obsessive–compulsive disorder, and anxiety) based on a meta-analysis of grey matter loss in 193 neuroimaging studies of 15,892 individuals [Goodkind et al., 2015].
There is evidence from whole-brain computational models that removing these and other regions results in a particularly strong reduction of the underlying repertoire as compared with the healthy brain (Honey and Sporns, 2008). This strongly suggests that CTC mechanisms might be impaired in neuropsychiatric disorders, perhaps differentially depending on the *** underlying changes in structural connectivity ***

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thank you, Clauwolf, for your help! So, you don't think it referso to synapses?

agree  Robert Forstag: The reference clearly seems to be to *physical* structures (including synapses) rather than to some abstract schema.

Explanation:
"Structural connectivity describes anatomical connections linking a set of neural elements. At the scale of the human brain, these connections generally refer to white matter projections linking cortical and subcortical regions. Structural connectivity of this kind is thought to be relatively stable on shorter time scales (seconds to minutes) but may be subject to plastic experience-dependent changes at longer time scales (hours to days). In human neuroimaging studies, structural brain connectivity is commonly measured as a set of undirected links, since the directionality of projections currently cannot be discerned."
