disciplne

English translation: discipline

10:11 Jul 1, 2020
English language (monolingual) [PRO]
Medical - Medical (general) / surgery
English term or phrase: disciplne
I'm revising a text on a specific surgical procedure and the author repeatedly uses the expression "the XX discipline", which I feel sounds odd.

The author at one point explains:

"XX is not a mere "incisional" approach to xx but a broad and articulated surgical discipline where fundamental rules and principles allow one to deal with the majority of clinical cases"

Examples of use in the text are:
[...] the XX discipline requires that the surgeon be prepared ..
In the XX discipline, there are no indications to ..
Resource optimization is a peculiar point of the XX discipline

I'm having doubts about "disciplne". I would think perhaps something like "paradigm" might be more fitting, but before correcting I would like to be sure the correction in justified.
I don't think surgical approach (ambiguous in surgery) or method would reflect the original meaning. It's an academic textbook.

Thanks for any help with this!

Selected answer:discipline
Explanation:
I think you should respect the writer and leave it as it is. They've chosen to use this term in a special way, and explained that it refers to "fundamental rules and principles allow[ing] one to deal with the majority of clinical cases".

One meaning of discipline is an accepted code of behaviour - it's a mindset as much as a set of techniques. For example, yoga has disciplines.

Thanks Phil! I've left "discipline" but also explained to the author that its meaning will not be immediately obvious to the reader and advised him to introduce the term more gradually and bring his definition forward to the Introduction instead of having readers wait till halfway through the book. If he builds up to it, then it might stop sounding so unidiomatic (in the context of his book).

Technique

Explanation:
I wouldn’t use “paradigm” because the surgeon clearly states that this is atypicalsurgery. In other words it is in fact a specialized surgery which employs specialized techniques.
Thus I would use “surgical technique.”

discipline in British academic context

Explanation:
According to what's presented, this might be a usage that's specific to the UK.

I did a search for 'discipline' in the British English dictionary (Cambridge) and found the following definition:
a particular area of study, especially a subject studied at a college or university

This is further supported in another online dictionary (medical):

A search in an American English dictionary did not turn up any mention of study.
