English term or phrase: audiences continue to use the media, flexibly,
"There are contentious issues here, for the ability of broadcasters to temporalize time in such a way now, with IPTV and repeats, and the plethora of channels now available, is changing, even from when Scannell was writing. However, this doesn't negate this temporalizing effect of the media, as we see in the research, audiences continue to use the media, flexibly, in the management of their time."

I'm not sure how to read the last sentence, precisely "audiences continue to use the media, flexibly, in the management of their time". But my guess is that in spite of so many different available media, they still play an important role in organizing audiences time, although audiences use them flexibly (flexibly with two commas around must refer to the use of the media, right?).

<audiences continue to use the media, flexibly,>
audiences continue to use the media, flexibly

Explanation:
I take this to say that the audience is still using the media to keep track of the time of day, etc. (this is part of that piece about using the news to regulate their day, I'm assuming?) but that they do it flexibly because there are so many more channels to look at.

agree  ifeelfree (X): Thank you, that makes sense. I'm not sure if the media shape their time management or they decide to use the media while managaing the time.

-> I think the media shape their time management - they use the media to manage their time but the structure comes from the media

disagree  Stephanie Ezrol: the change is that the audience is no longer using the media to keep track of the time of day.

Explanation:
The audience is using the media in its more modern format (with extra channels and progams that used to appear at a fixed time, now appearing as repeats at different time slots) "in the management of their time."

That last phrase "in the management of their time" refers to the fact that the audience is (as you said) now flexibly using the media to manage time.

Previously their time was organized around fixed program time slots. So the media still has a temporal aspect -- but it is now different. It is no longer only available in fixed time intervals.
