English language (monolingual) [Non-PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Materials (Plastics, Ceramics, etc.) / Plastics recycling
English term or phrase: Der Spiegel
The managing director of the plastics company Zipperling was reported as observing that "all recycling processes (for plastics) known today gobble up more energy than the production of new plastics". Taking that point Der Spiegel went on to note that rinsing of German waste products was using 60 millions cubic meters of drinking water a year.
i have made my search to find that it's a German magazine. Could it be anything else.cos i'm not finding this magazine mentioned in the reference of Chapter.
i'm using this sentence in my search so :
1. just write Der Spiegel ...as the German author did, assuming that it's well known magazine
2.or write the German Magazine Der Spiegel noted ..(i have no reference for the magazine itself, i.e. there will be no evidence that i have read this in the magazine)
3.or Der Spiegel is sthing else.

Der Spiegel
Explanation:
Clearly the well-known mag. is meant. You could write "... the renowned German magazine "Der Spiegel" went on to note ..."

Apparently reference was made to it elsewhere in the text, based on the "went on to note". Could it be that you simply don't have the complete text? If so, it might seem odd to mention the "renowned ..." at the point (as you would normally do that only for the first occurrence). I think it is safe enough to write simply "Der Spiegel".

neutral  Mike Delta: You would impress me, but not favourably, if you told me that der Spiegel is a famous magazine. If it's famous and I've not heard of it, I will feel stupid. If I've heard of it, and you tell me it's famous, I will think you rude.

-> Believe it or not, I know about this magazine since I was in secondary school (more than 14 years ago) and it does not matter who is stupid and who is rude if it is a must for any of us to be classified.

-> No, Bala, rest assured, the German authorities would NEVER allow a German citizen to be given this name. While it would, in fact, be possible in the US (barring copyright issues), I find it *extremely* unlikely, especially in the present context

agree  Mike Delta: Serial killers can be renown. If you wish to impress me favourably, you must tell me why it is renown. Der Spiegel, a German magazine renown for its blah, blah, blah. Otherwise I will be unfavourably impressed.
