English term or phrase: blatter shell valve
Does "blatter" exist in this context?
I can't find this anywhere. The author says he found it in a published work "so it must be OK". I'm not convinced, thinking it may be a typo (bladder? latter?...)

"Gametes were obtained as recommended by the FAO (CITA autores). Briefly, oysters were opened by removing the blatter shell valve and after validating an acceptable gonadal development (classification, Marteil 1976), the gonad was biopsied with a 40/8 needle (Terumo, completer…). "

Explanation:
I'm not an expert, but after some googling I think you are right that "blatter" is a typo.

Judging from the reference below, "blatter" may very well be a typo for "flatter".

This procedure involves sacrificing a number of ripe adults when larvae are required (Figure 39). Removing the flatter shell valve reveals the soft body tissues of the oysters. The gonad overlies the digestive tissues towards the umbone and hinge of the shell and when very ripe will extend around the adductor muscle. Either the gonad can be cut repeatedly with a scalpel and the exhuding gametes washed with filtered seawater into a part-filled beaker or bucket, or a clean Pasteur pipette can be inserted beneath the overlying gonad epithelium and the gametes removed by exerting gentle suction.

agree  Noni Gilbert Riley: Your first ref makes it look very convincing! I'd given up, zilch with blatter, and I wasn't as inspired as you with spotting what it might be a typo of!
