English term or phrase: Selection and gear supply sensor
No further context, except that this is (again) from a list about motor parts. Does this sensor detect a power supply? And what does "selection and gear" exactly mean? Thanks in advance.

Selected answer:Gear selection sensor
Explanation:
Cars have numerous sensors, and one of these is a gear selection sensor which informs (for want of a better word) the ECU which gear you have selected. Be it a manual or an Auto transmission (also in 2 speed differentials). For instance when you select Reverse, the sensor detects your selection, it sends a signal to the ECU, the ECU then tells the Body module, it then turns the light on on the dash, activates the reverse lights, turns on the reversing camera and the sensors, changes the information panel to a TV screen so you can see what the camera is recording, (some cars even droop the mirrors so you can see the curb better), restricts the pressure valve to the power steering so you have slightly more pressure to steer easier, etc, all in a split second.
When you are driving it is a lot more complicated than this, but you can imagine how many more functions would be in play, when you are driving.

"Supply" is just a term for indicating which gear is supplying the signal to the ECU

A sensor which indicates or displays the best selection of gear to drive the motor

Explanation:
From little context, I guess this sensor tells you to select the best gear most appropriate to drive the motor.
