English term or phrase: 4000 count display
Found in technical descriptions of electrical measuring instruments, e. g. "3 3/4 digit, 4000 count display". I cannot make out what the word "count" means here.

I will appreciate any explanation or a corresponding term in any language.

Explanation:
I think you'll find it means that the 3 3/4 digit display is designed to display results up to 4000.

Normally, a 3-digit display can display results up to 999, and a 4-digit display can dispaly results up to 9999

We talk of a 3½-digit display when we mean one that can dispaly up to 1999 — i.e. the '½' digit [the leading one] can only display either 0 [or blank] or 1

So by extrapolation, I would imagine they mean that '3/4' digit can display figures only up to 3, thus allowing a count of 3999; or maybe up to 4, allowing a count of 4999.

Hope those few ideas help a bit!

4000 dot display

Explanation:
is it a multimeter by any chance? I was just doing something similar! It's like the pixels on a TV. The dots that make the display. The higher the number, the better the image.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thank you very much for your answer. Actually this is not quite like the pixels but rather the maximum displayed value. Tony M's answer is correct - meanwhile I have found an explanation on the internet, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multimeter - the section "Resolution / Digital". Regards.

neutral  Tony M: I've never personally come across 'count' being used to mean 'dot', and in any case, at over 1000 dots per digit, that would be INCREDIBLY high resolution!
