materials separating devices

English translation: the nature of substances located between the devices

English language (monolingual) [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Electronics / Elect Eng / lighting control
English term or phrase: materials separating devices
talking about an RF tabletop keypad

"RF Performance: The range and performance of any RF system is dependent on a variety of complex factors such as: distance between devices, ****materials separating devices****, geometry of the home, geometry between devices, RF interference, and other installed electronic equipment. These installation factors are beyond xxxx's knowledge and control; therefore, Lutron cannot guarantee a minimum range between devices. Range performance could be reduced below the guidelines described in this installation instruction sheet. Refer to Application Note zzz, Understanding RF Communication - Path Loss for details."

...could these simply be obstacles? (or are obstacles included in "geometry between devices"?)

thanks!

Selected answer:the nature of substances located between the devices
Explanation:
If there is something between the devices, it matters what material it is made of - whether it is wood, metal, plastic etc. because of the different ways different materials affect radio waves.

composition of walls, partitions, and doors

Explanation:
Wood walls and drywall (plaster without metal lathe) would have little effect on range. Metal walls and walls with metal substrates or metal foil would effectively stop RF. Brick, stone, and concrete would vary according to the exact composition and moisture level. This is a household/office appliance, so materials would be those in those environments.
