English term or phrase: fire resistant separation
"In the US building codes, the presence of sprinklers automatically results in a one hour reduction in the fire resistant separation between spaces (walls, ceilings, floors) and between different occupancy classes."

I'm reading the article about sprinkler system in road tunnels and encountered "fire resistant separation". I cannot understand the part of " one hour reduction in the fire resistant separation". What does "fire resistant separation" mean? Thank you for your help in advance!

Selected answer:walls etc. that can resist fire
Explanation:
Fire barriers (walls etc. that can resist fire) are rated by how long they can resist a "standard" fire. So you can have a 1 hour, 2 hour, etc. fire barrier. Your text is saying that where there are sprinklers, the required quality of the fire barrier can be reduced by one hour. For example, if a 5 hour barrier is initially required, adding sprinklers reduces that requirement to a 4 hour barrier.
