"auto-ignition material" makes me think the author is referring to other chemical compounds that ignite or explode when they come into contact with water. It´s a long time since I studied chemistry, but I do recall that some materials burst into flame when they come into contact with air (magnesium?) and others react very violently when they come into contact with water (ex. some concentrated acids).
