a system for injecting a sample (to be analized) on a chromatographic column

Explanation:
If I understand it correctly, we are speaking gas chromatography here,
a very powerful analitic tool in chemistry and related fields. I have almost 4 years of experience with it (toxycology).

In gas-chromatography, the sample to be analyzed must be injected, in vapour (or gas) form into the gas stream that flows into the analytic column. This is usually obtained by using a devices called injector, where a microliter syringe (automatic or hand-held) is used to inject tiny amounts of the sample through a polyner self-sealing sept at a preset temperature. And the block of the injector is often called an injector port.

Split-splitless injector were developped for use with capillary columns - that are extremely efficient in separating analytes but are so narrow in bore that they can handle only minute amounts of samples. With a split-splitless injector, you can inject into the column only a small fraction (e.g. 1/100 or 1/1000) of the amount injected into the port by syringe; however, for techincal reasons, the ratio is only approximately known.

Thus, a split/splitless injector will give you better qualitative results (sensitivity, resolution, identification of trace compounds) but less reproducible quantitative results - because of less precise control of the amount of sample effectively injected into the column.
