English term or phrase: selects for
This is a document about rotating savings and credit associations that are based, primarily, on trust (confianza) among the participants. I've heard the phrase "selects for" usually in the context of genetics. Here I really don't understand what is meant, and I'm hoping someone can explain it:

In the case of ROSCAs, however, it is insufficient to always protect all participants from fraud or to prevent someone from leaving without contributing his or her share. Finally, confianza selects for an organized means of forming predictable expectations about relationships. How such relationships are actually transformed and negotiated is a processual and structural matter.

Explanation:
I think it is extending the genetic metaphor--that trusted-based credit associations favor/are conducive to/foster "organized means of forming predictable expectations about relationships." In other words, they create an environment where such organized means thrive.

These "organized means" can take a number of different forms depending on the specifics of the situation, so it would be too strong to say that trust-based credit organizations "create" such organized means.

Without knowing the specifics of the text, I'm not sure what exactly the author is getting at by these "organized means."

Kathryn,
Apologies for the delay in grading. THANK YOU! For what it's worth, the author emphasized that it he was "calling up" the genetic metaphor...
