Agriculture / corn crops
English term or phrase: selves
In a specifications table regarding the quality standards to be met by corn crops:

Genetic purity per lot (SNP): Minimum 93% (including a maximum of 5% Selves)

I've also found the following reference containing the term "selves":

Genetic Purity Testing
Are all individuals of a line/lot/bag the desired/declared
genetic make
-
up?
(In actuality = above a predetermined relative proportion)
Used by seed producers as a quality assurance
tool to identify:
Out crosses
*Selves* (where applies)
Seed mixes
Seed swaps
By seed producers, regulators, growers as:
Regulatory compliance testing

Could anyone please explain what "selves" refers to? As far as I understand, it is some kind of genetic defect of the seeds. Thanks a lot!

self-pollination
Explanation:
From the reference: One of the main features that confer high quality to the seed is its genetic purity, in which one of the major causes of contamination is the self-pollination of the female parent.
Corn is a bisexual plant but, apparently, the female plant can also pollinate itself in some circumstances which produces inferior seed.
