Concepts of print

I appreciate everyone's valuable input. This is one of those translations where no one was incorrect. I tried to pick the translation that would invoke the same impression that one gets when reading the term in the given context and with the given audience. Thank you.

I like Irshad Muhammad's translation too, but since I was looking for a more concrete word than تصورات which I had already contemplated, Samargawad's translation helped me more here.

While trying to translate I couldn't use any single recommendation. Although چھاپ / چھبائی seem to be the best terms for "print," they sound odd and don't naturally convey the intended meaning in Urdu. I'm picking Samargawad's answer for suggesting اصول since تصور or even نظریات does not convey the intended meaning. I added the word تحریر to emphasize the written aspect. I ended up with something like: متن اور تحریر کے اصول و نظریات

I added نظریات because the concept "text has meaning" is not really an اصول. Perhaps تصورات would be a better description of this concept.

That is it تحریر کے نظریات is correct
As I said sometimes it is difficult to find exact equivalent between the languages right away because of the cultural differences. And you got it right now

I thank everyone for their valuable input. While working on this project the word "نظریات" occured to me, which I think describes "concept" better than 'اصول" which I prefered earlier. I don't think "khayal" and "tasavvur" convey the right meaning here. I might use the term "تحریر کے نظریات" or "چھپائی کے نظریات"...I'll leave the question open for a little while to see if anyone has a comment on this.

Dear a1interpreter, I did mention that there are unconnected words in Urdu when I said, "unless they are only composed of letters that do not join (together)," which describes the words you stated.

Dear Qudsia: I would say طرز تحریر sometimes it is difficult to find exact equivalent between the languages right away because of the cultural differences. In Urdu also we have numerous unconnected words such as دو،دس،ذات،ڈر،رب،دن،رات and if you are filling a form you say واضع تَحرير،صاف لِکھائی

It may help to think in terms of English language only since in Urdu words cannot be written non-cursively...unless they are only composed of letters that do not join.

I gave the context in my question. "Children should be aware of the 'concepts of print.'" And, then I explained what concepts of print are. So far I think samargawad's translation seems best to me. I'm hoping for a better and more lay term for 'matan' since this is probably going to a less educated readership. Like I said, "print" should be taken more as "text.'

I mean an adult of 5th grade education. This info is going to parents who do not understand English, and who may only have a 5th grade (Urdu medium) education from Pakistan or India. They are being told about what their children need to learn for school and how they can help them.

... did you mean : a 'child' of 5th grade instead of 'adult' of 5th grade?
- or - an 'adult' who has only had education upto the 5th grade?
