English term or phrase: to catch a falling knife
Definition from wiseGEEK:
To catch a falling knife is a phrase used in investing terminology to describe a risky investment strategy. If you buy a stock that is dramatically lowering in value, you do so in the hopes that it will rebound shortly after you purchase it. The danger in trying to catch a falling knife is that the stock will continue to drop, causing you to lose money on an increasingly worthless investment. The phrase is a metaphor based on the idea that if you literally try to catch a falling knife, you may cut your hand.

Example sentence(s):
  • Buy, sell or hold? I think it is too late to sell. The question in my mind is whether to “catch a falling knife” or wait until there is some confirmation of a bottom in technical or fundamental terms. seekingalpha.com
  • The phrase perfectly captures the dangers of buying into a declining market. To do so is like trying to catch a falling knife: the momentum is all down, and we all know what happens to those who grasp a razor-sharp blade in mid-air. Charles Hugh Smith
  • Bargain-hunters tempted by the banks' falling share prices should beware the Square Mile adage; it's dangerous to catch a falling knife. Telegraph.co.uk

AllegroTrans Have you googled artículo 295 del plexo ritual? What did you find?

Linda Burns I did have a look at article 295, and I should have clarified that this is from the Código Procesal Penal Nacional. It appears it was updated just last month, although that is later than the date of my source document. In any case, article 295 addresses introduction of new evidence in a criminal matter. It looks more and more like plexo ritual is simply referring back to the corpus of the criminal procedure code.

Thank you so much for all of these sources. I should have clarified that the article 295 referred to is from the Código Procesal Penal, and based on context and the discussion here, I believe it's really just another form of referral back to the CPP.

I am also tempted to translate this as "applicable body of laws" or "applicable corpus of laws" as that makes sense in US legalese. However, based on the context of the document, article 295 is a reference to Argentina's Criminal Procedure Code, as it's discussed throughout the document. I have a feeling the use of plexo ritual is really stylistic more than anything, and just another way to refer back to the CPP.

Adrian MM. The Article or section in point is headed 'con las modificaciones. Última actualización 30/03/2019' suggesting that the updatable nature of the 'plexo' is important, as is 'ritual' as a reference to criminal (or otherwise) civil procedure.
