"When he was alive Jem had the power to perform a great service to Christendom by creating dissension among the Turks. His death was thus a great loss to the Christian cause. Yet a still greater loss had been the death of Pope Leo X who had laboured day and night for the defence of the church and resistance against the common enemy of all Christians, the Turks. Often, when I was with him, Leo would consult me about the way that the Christians could impede the Turks and prevent them from following up their victory at Belgrade. It would have been a great advantage to have in our hands Jem and to have brought him to Rome and sent him to Hungary. I had advised the Pope to do this and so to promote disaffection from the Sultan Selim."
