The silvicultural method that gradually removes the trees from a given stand by a series of partial cuttings over a relatively short period of time. Eventually all overstory trees are removed, resulting in an even-aged stand.

Om man avser att plantera eller använda sig av sådd lämnas vanligen få träd kvar. En trakt med få kvarlämnade träd brukar ses som ett kalhygge. Om ännu fler träd lämnas vid föryngringsavverkningen (ungefär 200-400 träd per hektar) brukar kvarvarande träd betecknas skärmställning och ingreppet för skärmhuggning. Vid avverkning tas träd av alla storlekar ut.
