Den innebär att ett företag i stället för att försöka konkurrera inom en befintlig marknad (den röda oceanen) ska skapa sig en helt ny, outforskad marknad, med nya regler (den blåa oceanen). Detta sker genom så kallat värdeskapande (𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯), som innebär en produktdifferentiering till låg kostnad.
