Allosteriska effektorer kan vara inhibitorer eller aktivatorer, dvs. ha en hämmande eller stimulerande inverkan på enzymets aktivitet. " Eget tillägg: NE:s definition är egentligen lite för snäv, eftersom det inte behöver röra sig om ett enzym utan kan vara ett annat biologiskt aktivt ämne.
