Había sufrido dolores periódicos en algunas ocasiones en la articulación temporomandibular, pero en comparación con los de otras articulaciones eran de carácter leve, a lo largo del último año la paciente había observado un cambio gradual de su oclusión, con pérdida de contacto en los dientes anteriores, ya no podía cortar un hilo con sus incisivos, como antes.

La ATM es una articulación bicondilar que relaciona la mandíbula con el cráneo. Su interacción con la oclusión dentaria hace posible las funciones masticatorias, de deglución y de fonación.

Las superficies óseas articulares están recubiertas por un fibrocartílago con un menisco articular interpuesto que las hace compatibles y facilita, así, los tres movimientos básicos de la mandíbula (apertura y cierre, lateralidades y protusión y retrusión).
