agree  Oliver Romero: En https://soloingenieria.net/foros/viewtopic.php?t=16045 y otras fuentes lo utilizan específicamente como la instalación de un taller. "Fosa" se suele utilizar para la sepultura, para las fosas sépticas... parece referirse más bien a hoyos en la tierra.

De acuerdo con el Diccionario para Ingenieros de Robb Louis, pit también se traduce como fosa, aunque según el Diccionario de Mineria de RLi Editores pit se traduce como rajo.
Como en open pit - rajo abierto

Cabe destacar que por varios años trabajé en la traducción de varios tipos de informes de una compañia candiense con concesión en mi país y en en ese caso se traducia como cielo abierto.
