English term or phrase: commodity slab
We're driving through our commodity area, now. This is where we store and mix the ingredients for our cow feed which we call Total Mixed Ration or TMR. This ***commodity slab*** is about 5 acres of cement.
On your right the large piles under the white covering are corn silage piles. The bulk of our TMR is corn silage. Now corn silage is fermented like sauerkraut, the corn is softened and made easier for the cows to digest at the same time it is preserved. So we chop the entire corn plant, stocks, cobs, kernels and all and pack it into these piles using very heavy tractors that are called packing tractors.
