English term or phrase: a Maya polity
Translation into academic Spanish for chiefly Latin American audience, interdisciplinary, including historians, art historians, archaeologists, and others. Contextual phrasing: "... an analysis of how a Maya polity of the late Classic period was affected by, and in turn responded to, rapid ecological change." What makes this tough is the difficulty of rendering "polity" in Spanish with anything approaching efficiency and elegance. For that matter, defining "polity" in English is not all that easy. It's not exactly government, political system, regime, State... but has elements of all of them, and more. One way I've often thought of the word is that it is a political equivalent of "society."

Asker: Thanks for the ideas. The trouble is that SOCIETY and POLITY are two very distinct concepts. Of your two proposed translations of POLITY, the one that's at least tenable is "régimen", though the latter mainly refers to those who are at the top wielding the power, whereas POLITY is broader in its connotations - the political equivalent of SOCIETY.

The above-referenced article might be especially useful.

disagree  JohnMcDove: I beg to differ. "Polis", per DRAE is only: 1. f.
