Hola Ricardo!

Hace algunos años, trabajé para la AT&T en México y Venezuela impartiendo cursos de empalmes de cable de fibra óptica.

Para discubrir el cable interior, se comenzaba por abrir el revestimiento exterior---extramademente duro, por cierto. Este proceso se lobraba mediante un hilo o cuerda super resistente, la punta del cual salía ligeramente por el el extremo del cable en la parte cortada [utilizando trozos de cable según la longitud deseada]. Con unas pinzas, se agarraba la punta del hilo, jalándolo hacia abajo hasta exponer una cantidad suficientemente larga para poder enrollarse en un dedo [con guantes puestos, por supuesto]. Con el hilo bien sujetado o enrollado en el dedo, entonces se jalaba hacia abajo como un "zipper" así exponiendo las capas subsecuentes.

En 8 años, seguro que han mejorado y simplificado este proceso pero esto es básicamente de que se trata.
