Todas las respuestas me parece que incluyen el concepto. Yo me inclinaría por alguno de estos “explicaos” que propongo... si no como redacción final, cuando menos como explicación del significado.

para que no se vea una línea de separación, sino que (el color) se difumine gradualmente
para difuminar (¿el pintalabios?) de forma gradual, natural y armoniosa...
