Účelom spojenia je získanie nových vlastností textílie, zlepšenia úžitkových hodnôt, ku ktorým patrí obzvlášť malá hmotnosť, ľahké ošetrovanie, plošná stabilita a priedušnosť, ale i zníženie nákladov pri ďalšom zpracovaní, rubná strana novo vzniknutej textílie tvorí podšívku.
