Obavljajući ribolovne aktivnosti, ribari uz ciljane vrste slučajno love i one koje nisu cilj njihovog ribolova (tzv. prilov ili «by catch»). Jedan deo tog prilova čine komercijalno nevažne vrste riba i beskičmenjaka, ali i neke druge vrste koje su zbog svoje ugroženosti zakonom zaštićene vrste.
