The intersubjective relation between Jesus and the contemplating believer presupposes what has been called devotion (devotio) (обет, благоговение, набожность, верность Христу), that is, the religious dialogue that an individual or community conducts with a partner imagined in a particular way. When it was supported by an image that made the partner in the image present as a living participant in the dialogue, one can describe this as image devotion.

Подумала сейчас, что Boris Shapiro прав в том смысле, что речь вряд ли идёт о православии, в котором употреблять "поклонение" чему-то вполне себе приемлемо. У других христианских течений может быть и не так, я не знаю. Наверное, лучше нейтральное "почитание" и "молитва", обращенная к образу.
