English term or phrase: support bubble
Definition from GOV.UK:
A support bubble is a support network which links 2 households. You have to meet certain eligibility rules to form a support bubble. This means not everyone will be able to form a support bubble. Once you’re in a support bubble, you can think of yourself as being in one ‘household’. It means you can have close contact with the other household in your bubble as if they were members of your own household. This means you do not need to maintain social distance with people in your support bubble.

Example sentence(s):
  • Everyone in your support bubble should take extra care when meeting up with people outside of the bubble. This includes maintaining a distance of at least 2 metres and following proper hygiene measures, including washing your hands frequently with warm water and soap. ageuk
  • The government expanded the eligibility of support bubbles in England on 2 December to help families with very young children or people with continuous care needs. BBC News
  • Fears grew earlier this month after reports emerged the government were considering scrapping support bubbles in a bid to reduce the cases of coronavirus transmission. But No.10 denied the reports, meaning that support bubbles are still allowed in all UK countries for those who can have it. Metro
