I don't think it's a good idea to involve in translation of languages you don't know - stick to your own mother tongue and outsource languages you don't know to local professionals;)

La meg sitere:
”Siste forbruksdag” brukes på lett bedervelige matvarer. ”Best før” er for mat som ikke blir så lett fordervet.

Det betyr at du ikke kan spise mat merket med "Siste forbruksdag" etter fastsatt dato. Mat merket med "Best før" kan derimot både selges og spises etter fastsatt dato, uten risiko for helseskader.

We are discussing the Pope's beard here! I checked my fridge and saw all different variations of this term on 10 different issues. Personally I like "Best før", because it's short and pithy, but "siste forbruksdag" is also not bad. I also noted some really awkward terms on 100% Norwegian made stuff;) So go for what you feel is appropriate and don't make a big issue out of this.

I agree with you explanation, but I think "siste forbruksdato" only works if there really is a complete date provided. When the source text says "Best before end 2011", it won't do with "siste forbruksdato 2011". So you're right that it should be cleared up whether this distinction exists.

In case of food which can be kept over a long time it's often marked "best før utgangen av" and then a month (or even a year). There's no point in this when it refers to food with a short "best before" date. I just wonder cause it says "end" in the term.
