Bendrąja prasme artimas kontaktas yra sąlygos, kuriomis sveikas žmogus gali užsikrėsti užkrečiamąja liga nuo sergančiojo arba besimptomio šios ligos nešiotojo. Kiekvienos ligos atveju šios sąlygos yra skirtingos, nes priklauso nuo ligos plitimo būdo.

Pvz., CDC nurodo, kad COVID-19 atveju artimas kontaktas yra bent 15 minučių buvimas ne daugiau 2 metrų atstumu nuo sergančiojo arba užsikrėtusiojo.
