fortis dominabitur astris The brave man is master over the stars. Explanation: That is to say, bravery overcomes fortune. The dative 'astris' is required because the deponent 'dominari' is intransitive. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 40 mins (2009-01-11 00:42:17 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- 'Astris' could also be construed as ablative, probably of instrument. Compare. e.g., Virgil, Aeneid, 7.10: 'summa dominarier arce' with Claudian, in Rufinum, 1.143: 'toti dominabere mundo'. |

fortis dominabitur astris The brave man will dominate the stars Explanation: Or: The brave man will master over the stars, or "will control the stars" As Joseph says, it can't be "strenght", because that is a noun, and "fortis" is used here as an adjective in place of a noun. I prefer the future tense, because the original is in the future tense, and I prefer using one verb instead of "is + noun". You can check a similar construction (The wise man will dominate the stars) in the link below. Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speculum_Astronomiae |
