English term or phrase: copy-edit
Definition:
Review of documents written by non-native English-speaking individual or for manuscripts that have been rejected for publication due to lack of clarity or readability.
Copy Editing ensures that the manuscript is clearly and logically presented, concise, and, most importantly, that the importance of the writer's point is communicated to the reader and is understandable even by someone who are not specialists in that field.

The previous translation was 原稿整理, which is not wrong but does not convey the nuance. I also found 推敲, but this does not sound familiar to me, and it is not 常用漢字。

Thank you for your help!

コピーエディット
Explanation:
I get your point about the required nuance, and ironically,
I think the best answer is to just say "コピーエディット", which
is an existing loanword in Japanese, in its own right.
The following examples, especially the first one from
a course description for a writing course, speak about
how to write "logical sentences" and construct "logical arguments".

"日本語のコピーエディット:応用と演習論理的な文章の書き方...論証の基本構造"
http://www.juse.or.jp/seminar/pdf/2005_seminar_10.pdf#search...

"...松永先生が日本化学会速報誌でのコピーエディットの経験を元にスタイルガイドを執筆されました..."
https://www.chemistry.or.jp/journals/event/2006/style_book.h...

"copy edit(or)" {parenthesis mine} → "コピー・エディタ"

Explanation:
Just for another idea. 推敲 would be good if the original writer is improving his/her own writing. It is not a uncommon word, though.

原文に忠実な編集

Explanation:
Just an educated guess.
By the way 推敲 means do one's best to find most suitable expression. In essense it is an action before editing, as editing is a correction made by self or someone else, then improve it to more clarity and/or to enhance more artistically (or linguistically) acceptable level.

I realized my previous explanation about 推敲 is not very clear. It simply means self-editing. For instance a writer writes, and rewrites and rewrites until he/she satisfied his own choice of languages.

For this reason, since you are editng someone else's work, 推敲 may not be a suitable choice. By the way, when you check Japanese-Japanese dictionaries such as Kouji-en or Dai-genkai you found its derivation. It is from Chinese (not surprisingly).

整理・編集

Explanation:
i think the word 'edit' is the key here, so ’編集’ i didn't want to leave it out. Considering what you mentioned above, "manuscript is clearly and logically presented, concise,.." i think it means '整理', putting things in order.
