sodは文字通り土、busterはそれを鍬などで叩き割るというのが直接の意味ですから、土を耕すひとで、つまり開拓農民です。
西部開拓時代にはみな160エーカーを政府から払い下げてもらい、まだ鍬がはいったことのない処女地を農地に変えました。これをホームステッドといいます。ところで同様に西部開拓者で、畑を耕さないひともいました。それがあなたの前の質問の open range で放牧する牧畜農家です。
そこで土地を耕すひとびとと放牧農家の間には、土地をめぐっていつも争いが起きました。両方とも土地が必要だからですが、その使い方が違うからです。
そこでお互い、他方の悪口をいいました。放牧農家は土地工作のひとびとをsodbusterと呼び、いっぽうそう呼ばれたほうは他のことを shit kicker と呼びました。あなたがいまなさっているお仕事の中にはたぶんこの言葉も必ず出てくるはずです。

「西部開拓史」「遥かなる大地へ」「ビッグトレイル」（ジョン・ウェインの）、純粋西部劇ではありませんがアメリカ史という観点から「国民の創生」

しかしsodの意味につきましては、たかこさんの芝生は完全な間違いではないと思います。sod-n.1 a section cut or torn from the surface of grassland. 2 the suface of the ground, esp. when covered with grass.(The Random House College Dictionary) の２の特に草に覆われた土地の表面の意味からきています。sodbusterは現在でも農業者という意味で使われています。使われ方によっては蔑視語になることはありますが下品な言葉ではありません。現在発行されているほとんどの英々辞書でslang(俗語、隠語）に分類されていますので、完全な蔑視、下品、卑猥語・vulgal slangではありません。"Sodbuster"という題のアメリカ開拓時代の物語も、小学生向け教育本として発行されています。余談ですが、それとは対象的にshitkickerの方はどの現在の英々辞書でもvulgal slangに分類されていますので、大変下品な言葉になります。

This is my last comment toward this subject which Takako-san already closed the question.
Susan-san, I admire your passion toward the Pioneer West in the US and the knowledge. Your answer for the question is totally correct.
Only, I wanted to make a point regarding for the meaning of the sod.
Because of that you dismissed the meaning of the sod to be connected toward grass in your description. Reality was that the birth of the word, sodbuster, had been very mush connected to them. That is not just dictionary term.

Why did cattle people and others call pioneer farmers as sodbusters the first place?
The pioneer farmers had been moving from one place to another until they had been settled their permanent places. The processes of that they left grassless lands for cattle ranching behind them. Those lands took for a while to recover as grass lands suitable
for cattle ranching. So, sodbuster was started as the meaning of grass destroyer. In the other hand, a word, sod, has been a vulgar term in British English. The meanings of the word in Japanese are yatsura, yarou,baka, kontikusyou. So when the times of the tensions between cattle ranchers and pioneer farmers had been raised in the West, it had been used including that British term also. If English immigrants or English descendant people used the word at that time, it was the exactly meaning of what Susan said in her explanation.

neutral  humbird: You are so right. Sodbuster is not a derogatory term. Nevertheless it is derived from the Pioneering West. Sod in your explanation is dictionary term, not much to do with real history.
