Boulder burials are very simple, yet striking monuments. As the name suggest they are simply burials beneath a large boulder. The burials contained within are mainly single and set in a small kist like chamber made from smaller stones. Boulder burials can be found on their own or within or around stone circles. The boulders often bear cup marks and were often picked for their curiously attractive shape or rock patterns.

岩棺葬、崖葬、幽崖葬、崖洞葬など、具体的な形式による岩葬があり、それにまつわる言葉も崖墓、崖穴墓、架壑船、横穴墓など数多くある。

中国南部では広大な地域にわたって岩葬が行なわれており、地域によってさまざまな岩葬の形式がある。近代の文明開化によりその多くは廃れてしまったが、古代における死体の保存方法であろうといわれる。
