Essenzialmente "give one-up" significa dimostrare sempre di essere migliore, un passo avanti a qualcuno. Mi sembra che tu possa osare con lo slang quindi io propenderei per "sborone", sebbene "un passo avanti" sia più letterale.

l'espressione potrebbe significare semplicemente avere la meglio in seguito a una gara, esame, lite. In questo caso tradurrei come primeggiare su qualcuno, ma anche come sopraffare o superare.

Se nel contesto ci fosse un effettivo intento di dimostrare di essere un passo avanti, allora tradurrei come mettere in ombra qualcuno, entrare in competizione con qualcuno.
