Io credo che tattoo in questo caso significhi impronta o segno, il seguito dice che se avesse battuto più forte sul pavimento avrebbe potuto scavare un tunnel.

Asker: Grazie a entrambi. Anch'io inizialmente avevo pensato all'impronta lasciata sul pavimento bianco. Sicuramente è giusto e implicito anche il significato di tamburellare per nervosismo e agitazione!

neutral  Elena Feriani: ho appena trovato questa spiegazione su un altro forum: tattoo here is a form of military music, normally from drums. EDIT: Insomma, secondo me "Impronta/segno" non c'entra perché si tratta di battere come su un tamburo come durante il "military tattoo".

Perché non sottolineare il fatto che Holly batteva il piede con un ritmo marcato e regolare, come una marcia militare che regola il passo in modo uniforme e cadenzato.Mi sembra che poi si possa legare bene anche al senso della frase successiva.

Il piede di H. batteva ritmicamente


Explanation:
Credo che tatoo si riferisca al ritmo della marcia militare per cui varrebbe la pena mantenere l’immagine del suono ritmico che evoca.
