Pressure Control
The most efficient method is combi metering.
In this method the pressure in the high pressure circuit is controlled at both the low pressure side as well as the high pressure side.
By carefully controlling the amount of fuel entering the pump and avoiding compression of excess fuel to high pressure the main high fuel pressure is regulated efficiently.
A pressure regulator on the rail is still used for accuracy and quick adjustment of the rail pressure.
Combi Metering
In low pressure side metering, the amount of fuel that is available for the high pressure pump to pressurize is controlled directly at the pump.
This ensures that only the amount of fuel required for the actual engine load is supplied to the common-rail.
The drawbacks of this approach are a lower accuracy and a small delay in pressure correction in the rail.
