English term or phrase: scintillator
Definition from European Nuclear Society:
Substance in which flashes of light are generated by impinging ionizing radiation (fluorescence). Nal(Tl)-monocrystals are particularly suitable for the detection of gamma radiation and anthracene or diphenyl oxazole dissolved in toluene is suitable for beta radiation. ZnS(Ag) is a favourable scintillator for detection of alpha radiation.

Example sentence(s):
  • Gadolinium silicate doped with cerium is a "fast" crystal and can be used as a protection scintillator. Its possible applications include computer tomography, spatial resolution of less than 1 mm. Marketech International
  • YAG (Yttrium Aluminum Garnet) single crystal scintillators are chosen by many scanning electron microscopists because they have a very fast response time of 50 - 60ns and (unlike plastic or most phosphor scintillators) they do not degrade when bombarded by electrons or ions. Canemco & Marivac
  • Plastic scintillators are prepared by bulk polymerization in aluminium (size up to 3.5 m) or glass cast and by pressure molding technique. Amcrys-H

szcintillátor
Definition:
A ~ a szcintillációs számlálók lényeges alkotóeleme.

Definition from own experience or research:
Olyan anyag, amelyben ionizáló részecskék fékeződésekor az elnyelt energia számottevő hányada (3–20%-a) látható fénnyé alakul. A keletkezett fény színe és a fénykibocsátás átlagos időtartama (az utánvilágítási idő) közelítőleg független a gerjesztés módjától, és jellemző az anyagra. Lényeges, hogy a keletkező fotonok száma arányos az elnyelt energiával. A ~ a szcintillációs számlálók lényeges alkotóeleme.

Example sentence(s):
  • A szcintillátorokat az aktív anyag fajtája szerint több csoportba sorolhatjuk: * szervetlen ionkristályok (NaI(Tl), CsI(Tl), BGO) * szerves egykristályok (antracén, naftalin) * szcintilláló oldatok (toluol) - Wikipedia
  • A szcintillátort az elektromosan töltött részecskék gerjesztik. A gerjesztett állapotok gyorsan alacsonyabb energiájú állapotokká változnak és közben szcintillációs fényt bocsátanak szét. Ezt a szcintillációs fényt fotoelektron-sokszorozókkal lehet megfigyelni. - Természet világa
  • A szcintillátorok által a kibocsátott fény intenzitása a gamma-sugárzás energiájának függvényében, vagyis a detektor válaszfüggvénye nem lineáris, bár sokszor használják ezt a közelítést gyakorlati alkalmazásokban kisebb energiaintervallumokra. - BME

Explanation:
A "szcintilláló anyag" megnevezés is haszálatos. Ennek a Természettudományi lexikonban szereplő meghatározása szerepel a fenti definícióban.
