English term or phrase: stock market raid
I think this is also called market manipulation but I’m not sure – it’s when they intentionally do something to artificially lower the value of the stock so they can make more money somehow. But I don’t really understand it because I’m ignorant about markets. I couldn’t find it in any dictionary or glossary. thank you!!

Explanation:

A Stock Exchange raid can mean firstly a public bid for shares whereby control of a company is gained without reaching agreement with the board of (managing) directors of the company which is about to be taken over. It can also be referred to as an unfriendly or hostile takeover bid.

...

2. A Stock Market raid can also be said to have taken place when shares have been purchased on the Stock Exchange (generally secret) and the aim of the this purchase is to acquire control of the company concerned.

What is a 'Takeover Bid'

A takeover bid is a type of corporate action in which an acquiring company makes an offer to the target company's shareholders to buy the target company's shares in order to gain control of the business. Takeover bids can either be friendly or hostile.

@ Annamaria

Időközben a Lucas Variety-t felvásárolta a TRW, melynek részvényeire napokkal ezelőtt ellenséges felvásárlási ajánlat érkezett a Northrop-tól, mely az ajánlat sikere esetén értékesítené a TRW autóipari részlegét. Természetszerűleg felmerül a kérdés, hogy mindez érintheti-e a Mezőgépet?

A "Defensive measures against hostile takeovers in the Common Market" című könyvben leírják, hogy a stock exchange raid ugyanaz, mint a hostile takeover bid. A hostile takeover raid-re 132 000 találat van. Tehát valószínű inkább ezt használják. A stock market raid-re 3500 találat van. Az se kevés.

@Horvath McClure Katalin

stock market raid = stock exchange raid = hostile turnover bid

ugyanaz

https://www.proz.com/kudoz/french_to_english/finance_general...

I am translating an academic text about "Offensives Boursieres" (i.e. loosely termed 'takeover bids/stock market raids') in France during the 20th century.

Mert "A stock market raid can also be said to have taken place when shares have been purchased on the Stock Exchange"

Asker: Annamaria, My question expressed that I was having trouble finding the term in Hungarian because I did not entirely understand the specific concept even in English. Lacking such clarity, when I looked up the various possible terms in Hungarian I could not discern which was the best match. I even explained the concept to several of my co-workers, and they were also stumped. I am perlexed by your assertion that I failed to provide enough context. Clearly it was enough for others to figure it out, and I am grateful for their help. Under a tight deadline, one might not have time to look deeply into each concept – sometimes we just need a term so we can move on. A quick scan of Kudoz amply exemplies this de facto usage The Kudoz discussion reveals that I was not alone in my obfuscation about these concepts and their sometimes homonymous terminology. Others’ provided valuable ways of framing the distinctions and labeling related terms. For instance, this comment of yours was very helpful: „A különbség azért is fontos, mert az árfolyam-manipuláció illegális, míg az ellenséges felvásárlás nem. Gabriella concisely explained the concept I was seeking: „Illegális tőzsdemanipulációt takar, több részvevő közös akcióját egy adott részvény árfolyamának befolyásolására”, although my material refers to an even more specific manipuláció than the one she defines. While one meaning of the term „raid” does involve security agencies such as the police, FBI, etc., there was nothing whatsoever in my original question to suggest this meaning. If the storming in of highly trained individuals in impressive black uniforms touting weapons and protective gear were involved in the matter at hand, it would have been exceptionally odd for me not to mention that in my question. Finally, and perhaps most importantly here, confidentiality is one of the ethical pillars of this profession. Certain contextual clues – even if altered to protect identity, etc. – could still be revealing, especially when overlaid with other contexts, taken as broadly as one can imagine. Even the translator him- or herself could be considered part of the context. A translator should consider this very carefully when providing context. I would be interested in your counter-arguments, should they exist.

A kérdező saját maga írja le, h "I think.." I don’t really understand it, I couldn't find it" ezért tette fel a kérdést/lásd fent
