véletlen bolyongás elmélete Definition from own experience or research: A véletlen bolyongás elmélete (másnéven hipotézise) egy olyan pénzügyi elmélet, amely szerint a tőzsdei árak véletlen bolyongás szerint alakulnak (tehát az árváltozások véletlenszerűek), és ezért nem jósolhatók meg. Az alapgondolat Jules Regnault francia brókerre vezethető vissza, aki 1863-ban kiadott egy könyvet, továbbá Louis Bachelier francia matematikusra, akinek „The Theory of Speculation” (A spekuláció elmélete) címmel 1900-ban írott doktori disszertációja figyelemre méltó felismeréseket és kommentárokat tartalmazott. Ugyanezeket az ötleteket később az MIT Sloan Management School professzora, Paul Cootner dolgozta ki az 1964-ben megjelent „The Random Character of Stock Market Prices” (A tőzsdei árak véletlenszerű jellege) című könyvében. A kifejezés Burton Malkiel, a Princeton Egyetem közgazdaságtan-professzorának 1973-ban megjelent könyve, „A Random Walk Down Wall Street” (Véletlenszerű bolyongás a Wall Street mentén) nyomán vált népszerűvé.
