In drama, a speech directed to the audience that supposedly is not audible to the other characters onstage at the time. When Hamlet first appears onstage, for example, his aside "A little more than kin, and less than kind!" gives the audience a strong sense of his alienation from King Claudius.

Aside यानी एकांतकथन का अर्थ है कि नाटक में कोई पात्र दर्शकों के समक्ष ऐसे प्रस्तुत हो या संवाद करे कि ऐसा लगे जैसे अन्य पात्र उसकी बात सुन नहीं रहे हैं। उसे तो केवल दर्शक ही सुन रहे हैं। पात्र उस विशेष बात को अलग से केवल दर्शकों को ही सुनाना चाहता है। यहाँ पर पात्र न तो स्वयं से बात कर रहा है और न अन्य पात्रों से।

Explanation:
ASIDE और SOLILOQUY में अंतर होता है। ASIDE का अर्थ एकांतकथन या एकालाप है। जबकि SOLILOQUY के लिए स्वगत-कथन का प्रयोग होता है। स्वगत-कथन या आत्मालाप या आत्मसंवाद एक ही हैं। SOLILOQUY में नाटक का कोई पात्र मंच पर अपने से ही बात कर रहा होता है। वह दर्शकों को सीधा संबोधित नहीं कर रहा होता।
