The term भरल has recently been suggested as an answer to an English term. I would like to have the defintion of the Hindi term in Hindi itself. Please quote the source of the definition. I couldn't find it in the few dictionaries I have access to.

Bharal, blue sheep - PSEUDOIS NAYAUR

Possibly Endangered

Class: Animals with Milk Glands (Mammalia)
Subclass: True Mammals (Eutheria)
Order: Even-toed Mammals (Artiodactyla)
Family: Bovidae.

The Name "Bharal": "Bharal" is Hindi for "Indian." "Sheep" comes from the Old English word "scep."

Location: Central Asia.

Habitat: Terrestrial. Montane regions at an altitude of 10,000-18,500 feet.

Description:The coat is dense, short, and slate gray; the underparts, backs of legs, and underside of tail are white. The horns, which are present in both males and females, are set quite close together at the base, then turn sideways and curve backward. In the ram they may reach 32 inches long! But the ewe's horns never exceed eight inches. The eyes are large, and the ears are small and pointed. These goats grow to five and a half feet long, and a shoulder height of 32 inches, and they weigh up to 180 pounds.

Behavior: The bharal lives in small groups and is active in the morning and evening. It feeds on grass, tubers, and lichens. It moves nimbly in rocky terrain and if in danger, stands motionless, camouflaged by its color, which blends with that of the rock.

Reproduction: Mating occurs in October or November and the young are born in May or June. The ewe gives birth to a single lamb, which nurses for about six months.

Go to the Artiodactyla Page to learn more about all the even-toed hoofed animals.

Or go to the Sheep Index to study other sheep.
