How to translate the word opium in the following sentence?
“Religion is the opium of the masses” is the argument often used by atheists to dismiss religion without addressing the substantial issues it addresses.

I tried following traslation:

जब भी धर्म को नकारने की बात सामने आती है तो यह कथन कि “धर्म जनता की अफीम है” नास्तिकों द्वारा प्रायः प्रयोग किया जाता है, उन महत्वपूर्ण मुद्दों को सम्बोधित किए बिना जिनपर यह कथन प्रहार करता है।

Please advise if translating opium as अफीम be OK here?

Explanation:
यहां अफीम शब्द उचित नहीं जान पड़ता है। शब्दकोष में देखा तो इसका अर्थ सुन्न करना या मूर्ख बनाना दिया गया है लेकिन यहां opium को क्रिया नहीं संज्ञा के रूप में प्रयोग किया गया है। संदर्भ के अनुसार इन तीनों में से किसी भी शब्द का प्रयोग किया जा सकता है।
