अंग्रेज़ी शब्दों stairs और ladders के लिए कौन-सा हिंदी पर्याय अधिक उपयुक्त रहेगा, विशेषकर तब जब इनका साथ-साथ उपयोग किया गया हो?

क्या ज़ीना और सीढ़ी पूर्णतया समानार्थक या पर्यायवाची हैं या इनके बीच कोई अन्तर है? क्या लकड़ी या धातु की सीढ़ी को ज़ीना कहा जा सकता है?

ज़ीना लकड़ी का भी हो सकता है, धातु का भी

सीढ़ी और ज़ीना जिन अर्थों में प्रचलित हो चले हैं, उसमें लकड़ी या धातु की बनी पोर्टेबल संरचना को सीढ़ी (ladder) ही कहते हैं, ज़ीना नहीं। भले ही मूल रूप से सीढ़ी और ज़ीना समानार्थी ही हैं।

stair और ladder दोनों के लिए ही सीढ़ी का प्रयोग आम है, लेकिन ladder के लिए ज़ीना प्रचलन में नहीं है। इसलिए यदि दोनों शब्द साथ हों तो सीढ़ी व ज़ीने का प्रयोग किया जा सकता है।

जहां तक मेरी जानकारी है, दोनों समानार्थी हैं। लेकिन प्रचलन में आमतौर पर लैडर के लिए सीढ़ी का ही प्रयोग होता है, ज़ीने का नहीं।

मद्दाह साहब के शब्दकोश में यह लिखा है -
ज़ीन: = सोपान, निश्रेणी, सीढ़ी; इमारतों की पक्की सीढ़ियां

Explanation:
Ladder is a portable structure that can be moved from one place to another. The spaces between the steps in a ladder are usually not enclosed.

In contrast, stairs is an immovable structure which is usually a permanent part of a building. It is usually fully enclosed, ie, there is no space between the steps. Sometimes they also have hand rails and banisters.

In Hindi the words available for these terms are सीढ़ी, सोपान, और जीना, but the problem is they are all more or less synonymous and the above distinction in meaning is not there in Hindi. Kamil Bulke's dictionary gives the same words for both. It also gives another word निसेनी, which I have not heard before.

I would suggest that you use सीढ़ी or सोपान for ladder and जीना for stairs.
